She spent a year teaching American literature at the University of Lausanne in Switzerland and touring the continent during breaks. Following that she spent two years in New York City, studying French at Columbia University and supporting herself by writing. Once Susan settled in California in the late sixties, she began producing artwork, at first small watercolors with some mixed media. In the eighties, she explored the medium of artist's books, making both one-of-a-kind and editioned works. One of the latter is in the Getty Collection in Los Angeles and in the Rita and Marvin Sackler Archive o.
