The virtual walls are designed to block off iRobot from going into an area you don't want it to enter. If an area is too large, you can also use this accessory to divide the area so the iRobot can run effectively. There is a switch with "off" and "auto" as the two options. You switch them to "auto" and they automatically beam the signal only when iRobot is nearby. They do NOT continuously drain batteries as if they were "auto" . so you can switch them to "auto" and forget them! The virtual walls 88701 have a arrow on top,then make sure you pointed the unit in the correct direction. No batteries come with them. They require 2 "C" batteries for each unit. And grab both sides of virtual wall on the bottom (there are indentations) at same time, then pull down,you can change batteries. Note:If your iRobot is equipped to work with the Virtual Wall/Lighthouse combo, it will NOT shop work with the Virtual Wall (only) version, which is what that product is.
