Robert Browning (1812 – 1889) was an English poet and playwright whose dramatic monologues put him among the Victorian poets. He was noted for irony, characterization, dark humour, social commentary, historical settings & challenging vocabulary & syntax. Byam Shaw (1872 – 1919) was a British painter, illustrator, designer and teacher. Shaw worked competently in a wide variety of media including oils, watercolour, pastels, pen and ink and deployed techniques such as dyeing and gilding. He was influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites.
