His paintings, prints, and sculptures feature cartoon-like images of humans, wolves, birds, teardrops, desert plants, and polka dots. In his two-dimensional work, Nelson often collages layers of motifs together with bits of appropriate text . His work has been praised for its ability to straddle narrative and abstraction. Nelson received an MFA in 1996 from the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University. His past group shows include several editions of the Arizona Biennial (2007, 2011, 2013, 2020) at the Tucson Museum of Art. In addition to his exhibition record, Nelson has been regularly commissioned to create public art.
