Antique Meiji Period Japan Japanese Cloisonne Butterflies Floral Pattern Fired Enamel Brass Teapot 1850-1899 No Lid 19th C in very good pre owned condition. No chips or cracks. No lid. Some of the cloisonne gold accents are worn, commensurate with its age. Fired enamel areas have tiny air bubbles from the manufacturing process as shown in photos. Approx msmts in inches: handle to spout 6 x 3.25 height x width of pot 3.75 x 1.75 across opening Cited from the Victoria and Albert shop Museum: Cloisonné is a way of enamelling an object, (typically made of copper) whereby fine wires are used to delineate the decorative areas (cloisons in French, hence cloisonné) into which enamel paste is applied before the object is fired and polished. The Japanese characters used for the word shippō (the Japanese for enamelware) mean 'Seven Treasures'. which is a reference to the seven treasures mentioned in Buddhist texts and could refer to the use of gold, silver, emerald, coral, agate, lapis lazuli, etc.
